Mission Statement
The Library Media Center's goal is to foster a student's love of reading and learning through multiple experiences with varied informational resources. The Media Center also supports the curriculum, policies, and educational goals of the Alexandria City Public Schools by promoting an information rich environment that supports inquiry, curiosity, and life-long learning.
Services
The library media specialist designs instructional plans to help students learn information literacy skills, the appreciation of literature and reading, and the research skills needed to become independent life-long learners. The library media specialist also collaborates with teachers to assist in teaching research units, identifying and locating information resources, and assisting with new technologies.
Schedule
The Library Media Center is open from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Children are encouraged to visit during the day to choose new books to read, use the computers for research, and work on projects. Staff are available to assist students in learning to use the library catalog and locate books. Students are to have notes from their teachers stating the purpose of their visit and the time they expect the children to return to their classrooms. The atmosphere is quiet and productive and children are to respect this professional environment.
The library media specialist meets weekly with kindergarten, first grade, second grade and life skills classes for story and poetry readings, skills and book check out. Grades three through five, dual language, and ESL classes schedule time weekly for book selection and checkout.
Resources
The collection development policy supports the broad informational needs of the students. Student curriculum, academic and supporting interests, and teacher and staff professional development influence the choices made. Research tools include computers for instruction, an electronic library catalog, databases, search engines on the Internet and other local reference materials.
