Special Programs

Charles Barrett has the following programs in addition to the regular education program. They include ESL (English as a Second Language), TAG (Talented and Gifted), Special Education (Learning Disabilities, Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy), Band and Orchestra.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a computer software program that tests students on their literal comprehension of fiction and nonfiction books. You can download and print the complete book list from our Web site.

Please check with your child's homeroom teacher for the appropriate reading level. The teacher can also tell you how many points your child is responsible for gathering each grading period. Selections can be found at the Charles Barrett Media Center or in your public library. If you have any questions, please contact us.

English Language Learning (ELL)

English Language Learning (ELL) is a very special program here at Charles Barrett. We have children coming from all over the world including Brazil, Phillipines, and India. ELL is for non-native students to help them become more comfortable with an American school and the English language.

Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)

The Talented and Gifted (TAG) program is designed to enrich the learning of all students. More information about TAG is available on the ACPS website.

Special Education

Our special education classes are modified to meet the individual needs of identified students.

Band/Orchestra

In fourth grade, students have the option of learning to play an instrument. Members of the band and orchestra perform for faculty, students and parents in two wonderful programs in the winter and spring.
