How to Enroll Your Child
Kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year begins on Tuesday, April 18 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at all elementary schools. Registration forms can be completed online a couple of weeks ahead of the start of registration (ACPS will send out notification when these are available). Alternatively, print kindergarten registration packets can be picked up at elementary schools in early April. All registration has to be completed in person, however, at the school or Central Office after April 18.
Visit your neighborhood school weekdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to register, or call to make an appointment.
If you need ADA accommodations, please call the Department of Student Services, Alternative Programs and Equity at 703-619-8034.
If your child needs health insurance, please call Inova Partnership for Healthier Kids at 703-698-2550 and request enrollment assistance. Please visit the ACPS School Health web page for more information.
When to Register
According to Virginia law, your child must be five years old on or before September 30 to register for kindergarten. There is no deadline for registration, but ACPS urges parents to register early. To be admitted, a child must meet all documentation and health requirements. If you decide not to register your child for kindergarten, you must contact the school system in writing.
Children who will be six years old on or before September 30, must, by law, attend school. Parents of students who are starting school as first-graders should follow kindergarten registration procedures.
Parents of students transferring to ACPS from other school districts should enroll their children as soon as possible upon moving to Alexandria. Registration dates for transfer students are ongoing.
Where to Register
To determine your home school, visit the online Attendance Zone Locator. If your child speaks English and was born in the United States, you must register at your home school, even if your child will attend a different ACPS school.
If a language other than English is spoken in your home, or your child was born outside the United States, register your child for school at the Office of English Learner (EL) Services. All families who may need assistance with English may also register at the EL Center located on the first floor at 1340 Braddock Place. Please call 703-619-8332 for more information.
Registration Lottery (If Needed)
If the number of students registered at a traditional calendar school exceeds the number of places by June 15, a lottery will be held for all prospective kindergartners registered by that date. Siblings of current students at that school will be registered automatically unless they choose to opt out.
Parents registering their child must have proof of residency. Two documents proving Alexandria City residency are required.
Currently, there are three options available for families to opt in to by applying for a Program Transfer:
- Jefferson-Houston School's K-8 Program
- Mount Vernon Community School's Dual Language Program/John Adams Elementary School's Dual Language Program
- Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School's Modified Calendar Program
Program options are based on capacity at these schools.
Families can also opt out of Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School and Mount Vernon Community School. Families may not opt out of John Adams Elementary School due to the availability of English language instruction. Families may not opt-out of Jefferson-Houston School at K-5, but may opt out of Jefferson-Houston School at middle school.
If the number of students registered at Tucker exceeds the number of spaces by June 1, a lottery will be held for all prospective kindergartners registered by that date. Siblings of current students will be registered automatically at Tucker unless they choose to opt out.
Families who opt out of Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School or Mount Vernon Community School will be placed in another school based on capacity and proximity to the student's home.
