How to Enroll Your Child
'FUZZY BRAINS ARE PRETTY BAD!'
Don't miss the latest ACPS-TV original video, in which 5-year-olds describe what they love about school and explain the importance of registering now for 2014-15 kindergarten. Thank you to Douglas MacArthur Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Cathleen Chamberlain and her class for providing such wonderful and heartfelt advice! Watch the public service announcement on YouTube.
Kindergarten registration for the 2014-15 school year is now open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during regular school days at all schools.
Read the information below and follow the appropriate links to learn what you need to know about Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) registration procedures and policies for all students, along with downloadable forms. If you need ADA accommodations, please call the Office of Student Services at 703-824-6912.
If your child needs health insurance, visit www.famis.org for information about Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS).
When to Register
According to Virginia law, your child must be five years old on or before September 30 to register for kindergarten. There is no deadline for registration, but ACPS urges parents to register early. To be admitted, a child must meet all documentation and health requirements. If you decide not to register your child for kindergarten, you must contact the school system in writing.
Children who will be six years old on or before September 30, must, by law, attend school. Parents of students who are starting school as first-graders should follow kindergarten registration procedures.
Parents of students transferring to ACPS from other school districts should enroll their children as soon as possible upon moving to Alexandria. Registration dates for transfer students are ongoing.
Parents who want their children to attend an ACPS school with a city-wide program must fill out an administrative transfer and indicate on the Reason for the Request portion that they desire to have their child attend a focus school.
Where to Register
If your child speaks English and was born in the United States, you must register at your home school, even if your child will attend a different ACPS school. To determine your home school, visit the online Attendance Zone Locator.
If there is a language other than English spoken in the home, or your child was born outside of the United States, you must register through the ELL office. However, if your child is enrolled in an ACPS preschool program (Virginia Preschool Initiative, Preschoolers Learning Together, or Early Childhood Special Education), you may enroll at your neighborhood school.
Parents registering their child must have proof of residency. Two documents proving Alexandria City residency are required.
