Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Morton Sherman has named Jason Sutton as the new principal for Francis C. Hammond 2 Middle School. Mr. Sutton has served as assistant principal at the T.C. Williams High School Minnie Howard Campus since 2009.

"Jason has proven to be a dedicated and trustworthy ACPS leader," Dr. Sherman said. "His strong commitment to the development of students and staff, and to providing a safe, stimulating and motivating learning environment make him a valuable addition to the Hammond leadership team."

Mr. Sutton previously served as a resource teacher at Minnie Howard, where he assisted with planning students' transportation needs, assessment, instructional leadership, communication, community relations and safety. Among other duties, he also arranged technology resources for students, reviewed and tracked all disciplinary referrals and conducted faculty/staff evaluations and coordinated with teachers to outline improvement plans. Mr. Sutton previously taught special education at the school.

Mr. Sutton received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education degree from Old Dominion University and a Master of Public Administration degree from Troy State University. He has Graduate Certificates in Special Education Leadership and Educational Leadership from George Mason University and a Graduate Certificate of Art in Special Education from Old Dominion University. He also earned an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts degree from S. Leo University. Mr. Sutton's certifications include an Administration and Supervision Endorsement K-12 and a Special Education Endorsement ED/LD from the State of Virginia Board of Education. Before joining ACPS, he worked as a special education teacher at Accotink Academy in Springfield and as a correctional officer in the Hampton Roads Regional Jail. He also served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army National Guard. Mr. Sutton is a National Education Association and Virginia Education Association delegate and a member of the Pi Alpha Alpha National Honor Society.

Mark Hayden is the new associate principal of Francis C. Hammond 2 Middle School. Since 2005, Mr. Hayden served the Manassas City Public Schools division in Manassas, Va. where he taught eighth grade English, in the gifted and talented, advanced, regular, and inclusion settings. For the past five years, Mr. Hayden has specialized in working with both special education students and English language learner students in an inclusion setting. He also served as a mentor for beginning teachers, the administrator of an engineering camp, and was a presenter of how to use the 6+1 Traits of Writing to teachers outside of the English department. Formerly, Mr. Hayden served four years in the United States Marine Corps where he earned the rank of sergeant, and afterwards served as a personal trainer for three years.

Mr. Hayden holds a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction specializing in the teaching of secondary English, and a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a specialization in creative writing. He has also completed the Educational Leadership Licensure program at George Mason University, and is planning on finishing his second Master's Degree in the fall of 2012. Afterwards, Mr. Hayden is looking into beginning a doctoral program in either curriculum and instruction or educational leadership.
