Locally Grown Produce Used in School Nutrition Services

Did you know that School Nutrition Services (SNS) uses locally grown produce? Our produce vendor buys from a network of farmers within about 200 miles of Alexandria. FNS asks that local produce be purchased as often as possible. Some of the farmers are listed below. They change, of course, based on growing season. We thank each of them for providing us with fresh, nutritious food.

Partial List of Farmers from Whom FNS Receives Food:

  • Lois Produce and Herbs, Montross, VA
  • McDowell's Mushrooms, Kenneth SQ, PA
  • Crown Orchards, Charlottesville, VA
  • Hess Farms, Shippensburg, PA
  • Eastern Fresh, Vineland, NJ
  • Parker Farms, Oak Gove, VA

We also use whatever harvests our student farmers glean from school gardens. In spring this is lettuce, radishes and onions; in early fall, we'll see tomatoes and some beans. Whatever is brought we use to prepare our fresh made chef salads.
