T.C. Williams High School

In 2002, as ACPS began to plan the construction of a new T.C. Williams High School, the school division committed to planning, building, and maintaining a green high school. In 2009, T.C. Williams High School became the first K-12 school in Virginia to achieve a LEED® Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council, remarked "The T.C. Williams project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come." The school's notable green features include a 450,000-gallon cistern that provides non-potable water for flushing, cooling and irrigation; structured parking to save land and reduce the urban heat island effect; a 10,000-square-foot vegetated roof to aid in storm water management; a permanent measurement and verification system to track water and energy usage at the facility; and recycling of 94% of construction and demolition debris. In addition to the LEED Gold certification, T.C. Williams was awarded a Green Innovation Award in the Best Institutional Project category during the Virginia Sustainable Building Network's 2007 annual meeting.

T.C. Williams has purchased a web-based interactive kiosk software with modules that provide education and awareness about our green initiatives. Combined with live and historical building data, it creates a powerful teaching tool. The kiosk information is also available online.
