Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register my child at Francis C. Hammond?

Review the registration information on our Web site.

My child is having a difficult time with a subject. What can I do?

There are often moments when new lessons are taught, students transfer into a new school with a new curriculum, or a subject has always been difficult for a student. Many of our teachers offer tutoring services before or after school or at other designed times as set by the teacher. If your child is struggling with a particular subject, contact your school counselor or your child's teacher to ask about tutoring. Alexandria City Public Schools also offer Saturday School, which is held at George Washington Middle School and provides students with additional support on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and noon. Please see the Saturday School schedule (PDF) for meeting days.

My child has an interest in pursuing acceptance into the National Junior Honor Society. What is the criteria?

The National Honor Society is a service organization for students who have displayed scholarship, leadership, service, and character (and citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

Francis C. Hammond's chapter has used the above criteria, and defines scholarship as students who maintain a 3.70 GPA and above each academic quarter. Student inductions are held in June, at which time family and significant others are asked to attend this ceremony and celebrate in your child's accomplishments. Students have an opportunity for induction to the National Honor Society at Minnie Howard School and T.C. Williams High School.

My child has an interest in Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. How do they apply?

Alexandria City Public Schools is a participating school system, and students who meet the criteria as established by Thomas Jefferson High School may apply for admission. To obtain an application please call 703-750-8300.
