Parent Handbook: Medical Services

Your child should be present in school everyday that he/she is physically able. However, a sick child should not be sent to school. Please keep your child home from school if he/she shows any of the following symptoms within 24 hours of school time:

Cora Kelly's school nurse is available to assist you with health-related matters and to provide emergency first-aid during the day. Make sure that all of your emergency contact information at the school is accurate and up-to-date. Please call if you are unsure whether or not to send your child to school. The school nurse also conducts vision and hearing screenings, weight and height measurements and administers all medication. If your child must take medication during the school day, please observe the following guidelines.

  1. Report your child's and medicine's name with the school nurse.
  2. Prescription medication must have parental and physician authorization and must be sent in the original container with the pharmacy label intact to be housed in the Cora Kelly clinic. The only exceptions are antibiotics prescribed for 14 days or less which require parental permission only.
  3. Students who receive nonprescription medication for fewer than three days must have a written note from their parents; more than three days requires both a doctor's authorization and parental permission.
  4. Students who maintain medication in the clinic on an as-needed basis must have written permission from the parents and from the prescribing physician. These instructions must be updated each new school year.
