Modified School Calendar Frequently Asked Questions
What is a modified school calendar?
Students attend school for the same number of days as the traditional calendar but the modified school year begins in late July or early August and ends in June. Students have the opportunity to attend additional days of instruction during extended learning sessions. Some students will be strongly encouraged to participate in the extended learning if they need additional support.
What is an extended learning?
Extended learning is a two-week session where students can return to school for additional support (remediation) and enrichment opportunities. For more information on extended learning and to view sample course offerings, visit our extended learning page.
What is the cost of extended learning?
Each session is $125 per student. For those on free- or reduced-price lunch, the cost is $10. There is no charge for students needing remediation.
Is transportation be provided?
Transportation is provided for students who normally ride the bus. The buses use the normal routes.
Are meals be provided?
Breakfast and lunch are provided during extended learning. Students receiving free- or reduced-price meals continue to receive those during extended learning.
What if my child does not need remediation?
If your child does not need remediation, they may choose two enrichment classes to attend.
What if the calendar does not fit our family needs?
Parents of students living in the attendance zones of Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School and Mount Vernon Community School who do not want to participate in the modified calendar may request an administrative transfer to another ACPS school that follows the traditional calendar. Transportation is not provided for administrative transfers.
What about summer school?
Under the modified calendar, there is no summer school. The days that students are to be in school are redistributed throughout the year. Students identified as summer school candidates are required to attend at least one extended learning class in October.
