Tutoring Programs
After-school Program
Our after-school program is designed to provide at-risk students with enrichment activities and tutoring. The focus of this program is to reinforce activities and lessons taught by classroom teachers. It also helps to motivate and support students' personal responsibility to school, and helps to develop independent thinking. The program is staffed by teachers and paraprofessionals.
Volunteer Program
Tutoring is offered during school hours by members of the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC), Department of Defense (DOD), Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), Public Broadcast System (PBS), Alexandria Education Partnership (AEP), Department of Health Services (DHS), and our Alexandria community. Tutoring is usually provided two to three times per week in 30-minute intervals, concentrating on reading, writing and some math. Most participants are first and second graders.
SOL Tutoring
Tutoring is scheduled after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. by teachers and paraprofessionals, concentrating on the Standards of Learning (SOLs) in language arts and math. This is designed to assist K-5 students in being successful on mastering grade-level objectives.
Wednesday Night Tutoring
Community members conduct Wednesday evening tutoring, September through May, from 7 to 8 p.m. Our evening tutors include volunteers from the Foxchase community, AEP, and DOD, our parents, and other Mount Vernon community members. Tutors concentrate on the SOLs in reading, writing, math, and science. This program is only for third and fifth grade students to prepare them for the SOL tests they will take in the spring.
