Alexandria Schools Host Open Houses for Students, Parents
Students and parents will have opportunities to visit classrooms and meet teachers during Alexandria City Public Schools' orientations and open houses scheduled before the 2012-13 school year starts. School opens on Aug. 1 for modified calendar schools Mount Vernon Community School and Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, and on Sept. 4 for all other schools. Following is a school-by-school list of upcoming open houses.
T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St., Alexandria, 703-824-6800 — An orientation for all rising 10th-graders and new 11th- and 12th-grade students will take place from 4:30-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the auditorium.
T.C. Williams High School Minnie Howard Campus, 3801 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, 703-824-6750 — An open house for all rising ninth-graders is scheduled for 4:30-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30.
Francis C. Hammond 1, 2 and 3 Middle Schools, 4646 Seminary Road, Alexandria, 703-461-4100 — A "Hotdogs for Hammond" open house will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30.
George Washington 1 and 2 Middle Schools, 1005 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, 703-706-4500 — An orientation for sixth-graders and new students and their families at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, will include a hot dog cookout at 2:30 p.m.
ACPS Adult Learning Center, Stonewall Campus, 25 South Quaker Lane, Room 27, Alexandria 703-461-4197 — Meet and greet new adult education staff and learn about current program offerings from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20.
John Adams Elementary School, 5651 Rayburn Ave., Alexandria, 703-824-6970 — Popsicles on the Playground for incoming Kindergarteners will take place from 6-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15. An open house for new students and families is scheduled for 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.

Patrick Henry Elementary School, 4643 Taney Ave., Alexandria, 703-461-4170 — A kindergarten orientation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m.
Jefferson-Houston School, 1501 Cameron St., Alexandria, 703-706-4400 — An ice cream social for the entire school will take place from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, in the atrium. An open house for all grades will be held from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.

Polk Elementary School, 5000 Polk Ave., Alexandria, 703-461-4180 — Kindergartners and new families will have an opportunity to meet the principal and other new families during Popsicles at Polk, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, on the playground. Families are asked to bring their school supplies to the school's open house, scheduled for 9-10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.
