Hammond 3 Students Give Presentation at School Board Meeting

Francis C. Hammond 3 Middle School Seventh-Grade Science Teacher Janelle Kochis and 12 of her students gave a presentation at the Alexandria City School Board meeting on Oct. 25. They spoke about the impact that the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is having on their work in science class. Students talked about the positive learning environment created during the first week of school through the basis of MYP Learner Profile Attributes, and about the practice of using reflection as a means for student-centered learning and empowerment.

Passionate students shared heart-felt reflections about their personal learning in science. Students wrote reflections after they had taken a test, completed a project or participated in a group problem-solving task, thus leading them to discover how practices could be improved for next time. One student described his journey for preparing for his presentation that night, even though he has always had a fear about speaking in front of others. Ms. Kochis' students also described her dedication to them as students by always providing hands-on learning experiences, care and compassion for all of her students. When asked to present for the School Board, these students spent many hours after school to write and practice what they wanted the school board to know about Hammond 3 and their work with IB MYP practices.

Hammond 3 students who presented included Ashan Ashraf, Lineliz Bermudes, Jomar Bonilla-Pratts, Katherine Cuellar-Moreno, Sidrah Hamid, Ashley Hernandez, Madison Ignacio, Maryam Islam, Hawanatu Kamara, Jude Lamonth, Sabrina Melendez and Ian Wilmore. Also in attendance to support Ms. Kochis and her students were Principal Andrea Sparks Brown, Associate Principal Vincent Jarosz, Language Arts Teacher Quanda Fudd, Math Teacher Veronica Montgomery, Science Teacher Brandon Edwards, Division-Level MYP Coordinator Jodie Peters and many proud parents.
