Board Members Attend Virginia School Boards Association Convention
Alexandria City School Board Chairman Sheryl Gorsuch and Vice Chairman Helen Morris presented a workshop at the annual convention of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA), held last week in Williamsburg. The program described the many components that contributed toward the board's Magna Award, presented in recognition of the five-year ACPS Strategic Plan.
"The convention continues to be a worthwhile opportunity to share with other school boards what's working in Alexandria and to learn from representatives of school boards from across the state," said Gorsuch, who will talk about the experience during the board meeting tonight, Nov. 19. The convention focused on providing school divisions with the insight, tools and knowledge needed to survive the ongoing budget cuts inflicted on Virginia's public education system. Board members will highlight the tools and information gathered at the event to help further student success during these tough economic times.
Other Alexandria City School Board representatives attending the convention included members Ronnie Campbell, Yvonne Folkerts and Marc Williams; student liaisons Edom Tesfa and Charlotte Clinger; and Clerk of the Board Candra Hodges. Approximately 1,000 school governance leaders attended the 2012 VSBA Annual Convention, participating in more than 51 workshops, clinics and critical issues sessions focused on topics such as closing the achievement gap and the role of division leadership; successful education foundations; how schools can become more disaster resistant; best practices to reduce legal challenges to adverse personnel actions; parliamentary procedure; navigating the social media landscape; and school law updates.
