Author Darren Shan will have lunch with 50 Club BILI members at Francis Hammond Middle School on Friday, Nov. 4, from 1-2 p.m. in the school library. The students are very excited because they have been focusing on Shan's Cirque Du Freak series of horror books during their club meetings.
Club BILI (Boys in Literacy Initiative) is an all-male book club that was created three years ago in an attempt to close the achievement gap in literacy between male and female students. The club focuses on reading material that is especially appealing to boys. There are currently 60 members reading at many different reading levels, but all are very enthusiastic about Shan's books.
"Mr. Shan has really inspired our males to read," says reading peer coach Jodie Peters. "They can't wait to meet him in person."
Shan has agreed to waive all charges since he will be in the area for a book signing in Tysons Corner later in the day.
