Next Steps for the T.C. Educational Program

The community forum to share information with Alexandrians about changes in the educational program at T.C. Williams High School was attended by almost 200 people. Community input was gathered and answers to questions will be forthcoming. Another forum is planned for February. Below are details of the forum and next steps.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the T.C. Parent Teacher Student Association sponsored a community forum entitled "Titan Pride: Building the Future." Participants viewed a "flyover" video that details the design of the new building and the site plan. They also had the opportunity to review the floor plan and classroom layouts that distinguish the smaller learning communities' core classrooms from the elective and common areas. The video will air on ACPS-TV, Channel 71, through the month of December on Mondays at 9:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 10 p.m., and Thursdays at 2 p.m.

After a discussion on the rationale for building the new school, the timeline of decisions that have already been made, and the structures which are inherent in smaller learning communities, participants discussed, in small groups, their recommendations and concerns regarding the design of the educational program. At the end of the evening, each group submitted its recommendations, questions and concerns in writing. Several of the major questions were also reported out to the entire group.

Next Steps

More than 150 attendants requested to be included on an e-mail distribution list to receive information regarding the T.C. educational program. In the coming days, a list of the recommendations and questions that were gathered at the forum will be sent to those on the e-mail list, as well as to Board members, PTA presidents and PTAC officers, administrators in grade 6-12 and others.
