T.C. Williams Wins Green Innovation Award

The new T.C. Williams High School, which will open on Sept. 4 for the 2007-08 school year, received a Green Innovation Award in the Best Institutional Project category during the Virginia Sustainable Building Network's recent annual meeting.

Dan Pierce, Project Manager for T.C. Williams, and David Peabody of Alexandrians for a Green T.C., accepted the honor, one of 10 awarded to community endeavors, organizations, businesses and design firms representing "the best Green projects or programs in Virginia."

The building, designed by Moseley Architects and built by the Hensel Phelps Construction Co., adheres to standards and principles from the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED "Green Building Rating System" version 2.1. Environmentally sound features include a 450,000-gallon underground cistern to collect and store rainwater for use in toilet flushing, air-conditioning operations and irrigation; a rooftop garden to provide stormwater management; waterless urinals to reduce the amount of water used inside the building; and a permanent measurement and verification system to track water and energy usage at the facility. Data collected will be made available to students at a central "dash board" in the Ferdinand T. Day Student Commons.

Tours of the facility will be included in a Grand Opening Celebration for the Alexandria community on Oct. 14. For more information, call the school at 703-824-6800.
