A video created by two of Nancy Bort's seventh-grade science classes at Francis C. Hammond Middle School won first place at a Youth Summit sponsored by Earth Force, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of watersheds.
"Holmes Run... and Other Streams. How They Affect Your Environment!" uses a mock newscast and commercial and a trash-adorned character named Eco Dude to educate the public on ways they can cut down on trash and prevent it from getting into waterways. In preparation, the students conducted a water-monitoring inventory of Holmes Run and collected and identified various species of macro invertebrates, which serve as indicators of water quality. They also studied the physical aspects of the stream and noted a large accumulation of trash, much of it recyclable.
Inspired by the first project, the class now is creating reusable shopping bags to distribute to the public at a nearby shopping center.
