Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Food and Nutrition Services this fall will replace polystyrene trays with paper "boats" for breakfast service, saving approximately $7,000 and preventing nearly 500,000 trays from being incinerated. All ACPS will use the compostable red and white plaid containers, which each cost approximately 1.5 cents less than a tray, says Director of Food and Nutrition Services Becky Domokos-Bays.
ACPS Food and Nutrition Services already has many "green" endeavors in place, including using energy-efficient equipment. All schools compost milk cartons and food waste; recycle cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, paper and computer ribbons; distribute 80-percent post-consumer waste non-bleached napkins; and use green cleaning products that feature reusable, recycled packaging. Lyles-Crouch Elementary School also recycles juice pouches
