Alexandrian Sisters Recognized for Recycling Efforts as Part of America Recycles Day

Two James K. Polk Elementary School students recently received awards from the City of Alexandria and Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments for their participation in America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized day held Nov. 15 to encourage Americans to recycle and buy recycled products. Each year the City of Alexandria encourages children and adults to pledge to help the environment in new ways. As part of the City of Alexandria's 2009 America Recycles Day Pledge Contest and the Eco-City Alexandria Plastic Bag Recycling Initiative, award winners Naomi and Rebekah Corbin pledged to increase recycling efforts throughout the community.

Naomi, a third-grader at Polk, won the City of Alexandria's pledge drawing and received a reusable shopping bag full of recycled material prizes. Rebekah, a Polk kindergartener, was selected as the regional pledge card winner in the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' America Recycles Day drawing. Rebekah won a $300 gift certificate to a local bicycle shop. Additionally, Polk received a $500 certificate to be used toward future environmental projects.
