The District X Honors Jazz Festival is being co-hosted by Francis C. Hammond Middle School and Episcopal High School this weekend. Students from T.C. Williams High School and Hammond and George Washington middle schools will participate in the annual event. A concert featuring the high-school and middle-school groups will take place at 5 p.m. at Episcopal High School, 1200 Quaker Lane, Alexandria, in the auditorium of the Ainslie Arts Building. The concert is free and open to the public.
Middle- and high-school musicians from Alexandria and Fairfax auditioned to be a part of the Junior and Senior District Honors Jazz Ensembles. Rehearsals were held Thursday evening and all day on Friday. The high-school ensemble is under the direction of Dorsey Mitchell Butler III, director of Jazz Studies at Claflin University. The middle- school ensemble is under the direction of Alivin R. Atkinson of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy.
Early childhood education students intern with the Alexandria Head Start program and provide assistance at the Tiny Titan Daycare Center housed in T.C. Williams High School.
