The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Teachers Dream Fund Board is proud to announce more than $9,000 in Round One funding awards! Ten winning proposals excited the selection team with fun, creative and academically enriching approaches to education. More than 1,000 students throughout ACPS will benefit from these projects. Round Two applications will be accepted until March 15, 2010. A total of $27,000 will be awarded to successful Round Two applications. Round One funding will support the following projects:
Young Detectives at Francis Hammond 3 Middle School
Teacher Melvin Stallings
Forty students will participate in a program exploring mysteries and crime-solving, to include reading mystery stories, learning forensic science techniques, meeting with guest speakers from NCIS, DEA and the FBI and taking a trip to the Spy Museum.
Nurturing Parenting at Patrick Henry Elementary School
Teacher Joaquin Perez
An eight-week parenting program will support student achievement for 15 Patrick Henry parents.
Metro-ing to the Mall Museums at Jefferson-Houston School
Teacher Sandra Slaven
Trips to five museums on the mall for 24 elementary students will include a scavenger hunt at each museum.
Therapeutic Riding at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology
Teacher Janie Aragon-Denno
Riding lessons for three special education students will teach the students how to prepare a horse for riding, ride and appropriately return the horse to the stable.
Strategies for English-Language Learning at George Washington 2 Middle School
Teacher Robert Murphy
Books for a group of 24 GW teachers who are working with the Literacy Coach to plan lessons and classroom assessments for ELL students.
Henry V Field Trip at T.C. Williams High School
Teacher Mark Eaton
Eighty-five seniors will attend a matinee performance of "Henry V" at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.
I heart math.com at Francis Hammond 2 Middle School
Teacher Holly Doden
Math videos will support learning math for middle-school students.
Reading is Fun Business at Patrick Henry Elementary School
Teacher Beverly Stewart
A book club will meet every two weeks during lunchtime to read and talk about provided grade-level and above books.
Club BILI Gross and Disgusting Book Club at Francis Hammond Middle School
Teacher Jodie Peters
Books and a field trip to the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority will be provided for sixth- through eighth-grade boys who love to read about "gross and disgusting" things.
Patrick Henry Ballroom Dancers at Patrick Henry Elementary School
Teacher Eileen Greenberg
A 12-week ballroom dancing program will enable fourth- and fifth-graders to learn how to dance the salsa, swing, waltz, foxtrot and cha-cha while teaching pride, confidence and respect.
Students enrolled in criminal justice courses intern (ride along) with the Alexandria Police Department.
