Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is planning additions and minor alterations to James K. Polk Elementary School to meet the system-wide need for additional instructional space. When completed in August 2011, the school will have four new primary classrooms, a platform/stage addition to the gymnasium and a gymnasium vestibule. The project will be presented to the public at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Polk library, 5000 Polk Ave.
Green building strategies such as day-lighting, high-efficiency HVAC systems, flow-thru planter boxes, vegetated roofs and the use of recycled material will be implemented as part of the ACPS "Greenovation" initiative.
