ACPS: A School Division on the Rise

Welcome to the inaugural issue of ACPS' Education Digest. This issue highlights the significant academic gains made by students during the 2010-11 school year and the areas that need more focus.

ACPS has much to celebrate even as we recognize our responsibility to address areas of concern.

For example:

  • progress at T.C. Williams this past year is remarkable, with scores at the highest levels ever in Writing (93.85% passing), English (95% passing), Mathematics (83% passing)
  • math achievement at Cora Kelly was the highest ever for any elementary school (97% passing)
  • Algebra for eighth grade students had the highest-ever participation rates (44% of all eighth graders taking Algebra with a 99% pass rate)
  • AP participation was the highest-ever (35%) even as the scores remained high and stable
  • Division-wide math scores continued to increase to a passing rate of 79% from 73% four years ago (with an increase in one point from last year)
  • Division-wide reading scores are at 83% compared to 80% four years ago (with a drop in one point from 84% last year)

The data and the evidence are clear: our strategic areas of focus have given us improved results. We know we can make a difference in a relative short period of time given the best curriculum, excellent instruction, and positive relationships.

Our responsibility is now to build on what we have learned and accomplished.

This is important. It can be done. We will do it together.

Respectfully,

Morton Sherman, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
