Charles Barrett Elementary Recognized as a Virginia High-Performing School

2012 Virginia Index of Performance Awards Announced by Governor and Department of Education

Superintendent Morton Sherman is pleased to announce that Charles Barrett Elementary School was honored with a 2012 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) award for advanced learning and achievement.

Barrett earned distinction under the VIP's Board of Education Excellence Award, which is bestowed upon schools that have met all federal and state accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward greater student achievement and expanded educational opportunities.

"I am extremely proud of our students, principal, and staff for earning this prestigious honor," said Dr. Sherman. "This well-deserved recognition is an honor not only for ACPS but for this great city. Congratulations and thank you to our staff, parents, and students for the hard work, spirit, dedication, and care which earned this well-deserved recognition."

Barrett also won the Excellence Award in 2011, along with George Mason Elementary School and Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy.

The Virginia Board of Education established the VIP awards in 2007 to recognize individual schools and divisions that achieve excellence goals and exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards. The 2012 awards are based on performance during the 2010-2011 school year — 447 schools and two school divisions earned a VIP award this year.

"The schools and divisions earning these awards have high-achieving students and teachers and leaders who are committed to innovation and offering new opportunities for learning," Governor McDonnell said. "I look forward to meeting some of the students and educators behind these success stories and congratulating them in person for their accomplishments."
