Francis C. Hammond Middle School was built in 1956. The building has housed a variety of grade levels. It was a high school (grades 9-12) from 1956 until 1971. Hammond High School gained a reputation for being one of the finest schools in the state. As a two-year school (grades 9-10) Hammond was in the forefront of racial desegregation (1971-1979). In the fall of 1979, Francis C. Hammond Junior High School opened (grades 7-9). In the fall of 1993 it was reorganized into a middle school (grades 6-8). The latest evolution for Francis C. Hammond was its reorganization in the fall of 2009 as a campus of three middle schools (FCH1, FCH2 and FCH3).
