Introduction

Patrick Henry Elementary School is located in the west end of the city of Alexandria, seven miles from the nation's capital. Patrick Henry is on a fifteen acre location in a valley that was once woodlands. The school was first occupied in September of 1953. In 1995, eight additional classes were added. In 1973, the Alexandria Recreation Department opened a modern gymnasium adjoining the school. Patrick Henry serves students in grades K-5.

Academic Curriculum

Patrick Henry's academic curriculum includes the language arts (reading, spelling, writing, speaking), mathematics, social studies, and science. The school also offers:

  • art instruction with a certified art teacher
  • vocal music instruction with a certified music teacher
  • instrumental music lessons beginning in fourth grade
  • physical education classes by a certified P.E. teacher
  • technology and the library are available to all students
  • family life instruction at age-appropriate levels
  • talented and gifted program offerings for students with special abilities
  • English as a Second Language classes

Technology

The Alexandria Schools launched a multi-year, multi-million dollar initiative to bring the latest in technologies into the classroom, including computers, telephones, multimedia, Internet and CD-ROM research capabilities. All classrooms have computers and a printer and some have SMART Boards. The school's library is automated, and students and staff can readily access information through the Internet. The school is a state-of-the-art leader in 21st century technology. Patrick Henry prides itself on being a place where students reflect the world and its strength is in its diversity. "The world is a school and the school is a world."

School Support Team

At Patrick Henry, a team of principal, assistant principal, psychologist, social worker, nurse and guidance counselor work together to help students and their families. They provide an array of testing, counseling and other support services.

Volunteers

Parent and community volunteers play a key role in the education of children at Patrick Henry. Volunteers tutor students, arrange special events and chaperone field trips. The PTA provides financial support and person-power to Patrick Henry.
