Introduction

George Mason Elementary School was built in 1939. The building had two major renovations, in 1949 and 1977. Other building renovations took place in 1988, 1997 and 2005. The school serves children from the central section of the city and a section of the Arlandria neighborhood. George Mason is fully accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia and has also made AYP.

Academic Curriculum

George Mason's academic program includes reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science with an infusion of technology. The school also offers:

  • art instruction with a certified art teacher once a week
  • vocal music instruction with a certified music teacher once a week
  • instrumental music lessons beginning in fourth grade
  • two physical education classes a week with a certified P.E. teacher
  • strong program for talented and gifted children who perform above their grade level academically or who have special ability in art and/or music
  • instruction in family life education at levels appropriate to age

Technology

George Mason Elementary School is fully networked with computer access to the Internet in every classroom. The school has a computer lab connected to an automated library. The computer lab is used for research and Internet programs subscribed to by ACPS. Every classroom is equipped with 4 to 5 computers, a wall mounted television, a VCR/DVD player, a telephone, and most recently, an audio enhancement system. The school cafeteria also has an audio enhancement system.

At George Mason, a team of principal, psychologist, social worker, nurse and guidance counselor work together to help students and their families. They provide an array of testing, counseling and other support services.
