Pierrette Peters, Principal

Currently serving her fifth year as Principal of Francis C. Hammond Middle School, Ms. Peters is honored to lead our wonderful school community. She previously served as the principal of George Washington 2 Middle School and lead academic principal and academic principal of mathematics and science at T.C. Williams High School. Prior to entering school administration, Ms. Peters served as a ninth-grade biology teacher at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., and a seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher and department chairperson at James Madison Middle School in Upper Marlboro, Md.

 

Ms. Peters earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a master of education degree in the master teacher program at Regent University, a master of education degree in educational leadership from George Mason University, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.

Ms. Kanika Dorsey, Grade 6 Academic Principal

Ms. Dorsey, a 15 year veteran of public education, has worked in New York State, VA, D.C., and MD public schools.  In addition to teaching English Language Arts (ELA) at the middle school level, she has served as a literacy coach, testing coordinator, and resource teacher.  Ms. Dorsey worked at the MD Department of Education as an ELA Specialist where she helped school districts develop formative assessments and written lessons for grades 7 and 8. She also served as the ELA Specialist on the Maryland Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) team.  Ms. Dorsey is a graduate of Lehman College in the Bronx, NY where she earned an undergraduate degree in English.  She earned a Master of Secondary Education degree from Bowie State University and is currently working on her Ph.D. at Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Mrs. Anika Buster-Singleton, Grade 7 Academic Principal

Mrs. Buster-Singleton is a proud product of the Alexandria City Public Schools with 20 years of service in the school division.  During her years of service, she has had the awesome task of sharing her passion for reading and writing as a language arts teacher at George Washington MS. She has also served as an instructional coach supporting curriculum implementation and assisting teachers with refining their craft as skillful educators. As an academic principal, she serves with a continued passion to provide aspiring admirals and their families a quality learning experience in a safe and welcoming learning environment. 

Mrs. Buster-Singleton has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in English and History and a Master of Science in Education degree from Old Dominion University. She has also earned a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership.

During his time in ACPS, Mr. George has served as a middle school math teacher at George Washington Middle School and as a Technology Integration Specialist at Samuel Tucker Elementary School and Francis C. Hammond Middle School. For the last six years, Mr. George has served as the Assistant Principal at John Adams Elementary School. Mr. George is a native of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Education from DeSales University. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies from Catholic University and a Graduate Certificate in School Administration and Supervision from The Johns Hopkins University.

Tim Brannon, Academic Principal-International Academy

Mr. Brannon was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. He has 10 years of experience in education, all of those years in Alexandria at Hammond Middle School. He taught social studies for 7 years at Hammond, while adding National Board, NETS*T, and ELL certification. Since 2014, he has worked as an administrator to plan and run the International Academy. His passion lies in ensuring that all students receive an equitable education and that Hammond becomes a world-class middle school.

Denee Scott-Elliott, Director of School Counseling

Ms. Scott was born and raised in New York City. She is a graduate of SUNY Oswego where she earned her undergraduate and Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. She relocated to the Northern Virginia area where she continued her teaching career as a 5th grade teacher at JHAA. While teaching, she pursued her Counseling Degree from George Mason University and, shortly after, started her counseling career. Ms. Scott has worked in secondary schools as a counselor for over 10 years. She is passionate about working with children and believes that counselors are essential in the success of students.

Ms. Tenicka Strown, Dean of Students

Ms. Tenicka Strown is a veteran of public education and has worked as an educator for the past 20 years. She began her career as a teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools where she taught math and science. She also served in leadership roles such as Team Leader, Science Department Chair, Summer School Principal, and Academic Dean/Assistant Principal while serving in DC and MD public schools. Upon relocating to Alexandria City Public Schools, she has served the last 5 years as an Instructional Coach, Student Resource Coordinator and is currently serving as Dean of Students. As Dean of Students, she's constantly discussing ways to reshape and sustain the school's positive culture and ensure that students internalize the school's values and aspirations for academic excellence.

Ms. Strown has earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Mississippi Valley State University. She also earned a Master of Art in Secondary Education from Johns Hopkins University and Master of Art in Education Administration from Trinity Washington University.

Michael Diggins, Dean of Students

Mr. Diggins is a native Alexandrian and product of ACPS.  He earned a B.S. in Marketing Education from Virginia Tech and a Master's Degree from George Mason in Education Leadership.  Mr. Diggins has 24 years of service in Alexandria City Public Schools, 11 years as a Technology and Marketing teacher and 10 years as an administrator, serving as an associate principal and Dean.

Ms. Robertson has over 15 years of diverse educational experiences within the K-12 and higher education systems, promoting the academic success of all students and increasing parental involvement in the educational process.  Her past roles include: Title I Coordinator and Parent Engagement Specialist at the elementary level, IB Spanish and ESOL teacher at the secondary level, and Manager of the College Success Program for Fairfax County Public Schools.  She has earned Bachelor’s degrees in International Business and Spanish from Temple University and Georgia State University, respectively. She has also earned Master’s degrees in Adult Education and Secondary Education from the University of Georgia and Belmont University, respectively. An administration and leadership certificate has been earned from The George Washington University.

Jessica Donahue, Special Education Accountability Specialist

During her time in ACPS, Ms. Donahue has served as a Special Education Teacher at Cora Kelly Elementary School and, now, as the Special Education Accountability Specialist at Francis C. Hammond Middle School. She is a native of Long Island, New York. Ms. Donahue is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Education degree in Special and Elementary Education.
