    Background

A new Douglas MacArthur Elementary School is scheduled to open its doors in January 2023. The original opening was scheduled for 2025, but in April 2019, the School Board voted to use swing space at the former Patrick Henry Elementary School for Douglas MacArthur students beginning in 2020. This decision allowed ACPS to move up the timeline for the Douglas MacArthur community.

A total of $56,581,549 has been allocated to the project in the proposed FY 2020-29 Capital Improvement Program Budget.

Douglas MacArthur Elementary School Swing Space at Taney Avenue

ACPS will be providing updates on the swing space project and soliciting feedback at community meetings throughout the double occupancy of the site. The first of these open community meetings was held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Patrick Henry School.

A concept design for the swing space has been created and will be submitted for the Development Special Use Permit Amendment with the City.

Collaborative Committee Between MacArthur and Patrick Henry

In May, ACPS set up the Superintendent's Patrick Henry and Douglas MacArthur Collaborative Committee. The committee includes members who had been on a Patrick Henry Advisory Group when it was under construction as well as representatives from both school’s PTA, staff members, RPCA, Civic Association liaisons and school board and city council members.

The role of the committee is to:

    • Represent interests that support a successful visiting occupancy of Douglas MacArthur on the Patrick Henry site
    • Identify concerns and challenges of the dual use
    • Propose solutions as they arise during the dual occupancy
    • Facilitate positive relationships between the two schools and communities

The two chairs selected for this committee are: Michael Doney, who represents Patrick Henry, and Dana Chambers, a Douglas MacArthur representative.

Please keep up with this page and the modernization page on ACPS main website for more information.
