• The federal government was pushing Alexandria to focus on desegregation at the elementary school level. But violent clashes between students and adults on the grounds of Alexandria’s schools, drove the current Superintendent John C. Albohm to address integration from the top-down. While athletics has been a source of pride it has also been a venue for rivalries and racial tensions to spill over and complicate desegregation efforts. Albohm used football instead as a tool to unify the students and the city through the one-high school solution.
