Superintendent Hires New Head of School
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. has selected Dr. John McCain as the Transformational Head of School for Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School.
Dr. McCain, who will start in the role on July 1, has previously served as an elementary and middle school principal, assistant principal and a support specialist for teachers, providing coaching to teachers to help them improve their academic outcomes.
He has also served as area superintendent of elementary schools, and Advisor for the Principal Leadership Academy at Highpoint University in North Carolina, where he facilitated training sessions to provide feedback around the recruitment and selection process of teachers.
“I am delighted to welcome such a highly experienced and well-respected educational leader as Dr. McCain to our ACPS leadership team. His background and experience make him the ideal person to lead Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School as it continues to grow and foster sustained academic progress in the coming years,” said ACPS Chief Academic Officer Dr. Terri Mozingo.
Dr. McCain began his career in education as an elementary teacher of grades four and six in Mebane, North Carolina. He quickly moved to a position as assistant principal and served as a middle school principal in Roxboro, North Carolina from 2007 until 2011.
He moved back to elementary education as principal in 2011 in Durham (NC) where he eventually served as Area Superintendent of Elementary Schools. More recently he has worked in the private education sector as an education support specialist for a firm in North Carolina.
Dr. McCain holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a masters in supervision and administration of elementary education. His doctorate in educational leadership is from Highpoint University, North Carolina.
“I am delighted to be the next Head of School for Jefferson-Houston. My work has taught me the effectiveness of creating systems and processes and I am looking forward to working with staff and parents at Jefferson-Houston to do just that,” said McCain.
Staff and community at Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School will have the opportunity to meet Dr. McCain in July.
