Your Child has Tested Positive or been Exposed to COVID-19. What’s Next?
  • Your child has tested positive for COVID-19. Now what?

    Day 1 Day 10
    • Once you receive a positive test result for your child, please contact the school as soon as possible. We ask that you reach out to the school principal and school nurse.
    • You should plan to keep your child home for 10 days following the start of their symptoms and consult with your medical provider as needed.
    • Your school may contact you to gather additional information about their activities in the days they were last in school or in school activities.
    • The Alexandria Health Department will communicate with you within the first few days to gather and provide additional information.
    • Your school will notify you with additional instructions.
    • Teachers will work to provide ongoing learning through live streaming and the posting of assignments to Canvas if the student is well enough to participate.
    • Your child has been isolated for 10 days. If they have been fever-
      free for 24 hours without the aid of fever-reducing medications, they are cleared to return to school on Day 11.
  • Your unvaccinated child has been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case. What happens now?

    Day 1 Day 5 Day 14
    • If the child is currently in school, you will be contacted by the school for pickup.
    • If the child is not currently at school, you will be contacted either by the school or both the school and the Alexandria Health Department to notify you of your child’s close contact status.
    • You should plan to keep your child home for 14 days after the date of their last exposure.
    • Check in with your child to see if they are experiencing symptoms.
      • Asymptomatic students will be instructed to quarantine even if
    • they remain asymptomatic.
    • Teachers will work to provide ongoing learning through livestreaming and the posting of assignments to Canvas if the student is well enough to participate.
    • Please follow any guidance from the Alexandria Health Department.
    Your child has been quarantined for 5 days.
    • Get a COVID-19 PCR test for your child after day 5.
    • If your child tests positive:
      • Refer to the instructions for confirmed positive tests.
    • If your child tests negative:
      • Monitor symptoms. Your child should be fever-free, without the use of medication, for a full 24 hours before returning to school.
      • Your child can return to school on day 15 if they remain asymptomatic.
    • You and your child will engage with teachers to complete classwork.
    • Your child has been asymptomatic for a full 14 days and is cleared to return to school on Day 15.
    • No further action is required.
  • Your fully vaccinated child has been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case. What’s next?

    Day 1 Day 14
    • Check in with your child to see if they are experiencing symptoms.
    • It is recommended that they test within 3-5 days of the last known date of exposure.
    • As long as they remain asymptomatic, students will not be instructed to quarantine.
    • Your child has been asymptomatic for a full 14 days.
    • No further action is required.
