Wellness on Wheels (WOW) Dental Bus

The ACPS Wellness on Wheels (WOW) Bus is a mobile dental unit currently serving John Adams, Patrick Henry, Cora Kelly and William Ramsay elementary school students. More schools will soon be served. On board the WOW Bus are licensed dental professionals from Neighborhood Health who provide primary dental care, including examinations, cleanings, sealant applications, fillings and other primary preventive and restorative procedures. All care occurs during the school day so that children do not have to miss long periods from class, their parents do not have to take time off from work to accompany them and the students can return to class better able to concentrate on their lessons free from mouth pain.

Neighborhood Health accepts most forms of dental insurance and also offers a discounted fee for children who are not eligible for insurance. All children who have active Medicaid, FAMIS and FAMIS Plus for medical care are automatically enrolled with dental insurance. To ensure your children get on the list for a dental visit when the WOW Bus visits their school, watch for the registration form that comes home with children in their backpacks; complete and return the form promptly.

You may contact Neighborhood Health at 703-535-5568 or phone our WOW Bus Coordinator at 703-577-3823 for more information on when the WOW Bus will be at your child's school. If your child generally gets care through the WOW Bus and is in need of dental care between visits, please phone the Neighborhood Health main number at 703-535-5568 for an appointment at one of their other dental clinics.

    History of the WOW Bus

In 2012, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Alexandria City Public Schools a $380,771 grant to start a mobile health unit to serve John Adams, William Ramsay and Patrick Henry elementary school students.

ACPS is one of only two locations in Virginia to receive this funding. HRSA awarded grants to 197 applicants, including school districts, nonprofits and medical service providers around the country.
