College and Career Center

  • Open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (summer, too!), the College and Career Center (CCC) provides information about colleges and universities, NOVA's Pathway to the Baccalaureate program, standardized testing and test preparation, financial aid and scholarships, careers, summer opportunities and more.

    The center hosts representatives from colleges and universities across the country to speak with all interested students.

    Students may request a copy of their transcript, fee waivers for SAT and ACT exams, passes to college rep visits, and more. Students are encouraged to drop by before and after school and during lunch.

    Parents are welcome to visit by appointment.

    DEADLINES TO REGISTER FOR SPRING ACT AND SAT EXAMS

    Thursday, May 3 is the deadline to register for the SAT on June 2 (www.collegeboard.org) Fee waivers available in the CCC.

    Friday, May 4 is the deadline to register for the ACT on June 9 (www.actstudent.org) Fee waivers available in the CCC.

    CAREER SHADOWING DAY event will take place on Thursday, April 26. If you would like to participate in this full-day field trip, stop by the College and Career Center for more information and a permission slip. This exciting day is sponsored by The City of Alexandria’s Department of Community & Human Services, the Commission for Women, and the T.C. Williams Department of School Counseling. Students will join community mentors for a day in the workplace learning about various career options to make the connection between school and work. 

    SUMMER STEM INTERNSHIPS are available to juniors and seniors at George Washington University, George Mason University and MetroLink Networks through STEMShip. The application requires a teacher or counselor recommendation letter. Apply at www.stemship.org/apply by May 1.

    NOVA STEM DAY ON SATURDAY, APRIL 14 at the NOVA Alexandria Campus.  This is a free public STEM festival open to the community. There will be hands-on activities led by NOVA faculty, staff and students, as well as local community educators. More details about NOVA STEM Day can be found at www.novastemday.com

    EXPLORING IT (TECHNOLOGY) FOR WOMEN INTERESTED IN STEM CAREERS Join NOVA|aFit at the Alexandria Campus on Thursday, April 26 from 4:30pm - 8:30pm to meet Women in STEM and explore the possibilities in IT, Computer Science and Cybersecurity.     FREE HISPANIC COLLEGE INSTITUTE JUNE 28 - JULY 1 AT VIRGINIA TECH for current 10th and 11th graders.     LANDMARK COLLEGE will visit on Tuesday, April 17 at 9:45am. Landmark College is a private college exclusively for those with diagnosed learning disabilities, attention disorders or autism. Located in Putney, Vermont, Landmark offers two and four-year programs in the liberal arts and sciences. Parents welcome!

    STUDENT CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION PAID SUMMER PROGRAM SCA’s mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of the environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. SCA’s DC Summer Conservation Crew Program will have several crews with members aged 15-19, working in local national parks. Students will be paid a total of $2,000 for the 6 week program.     SENIOR EXPERIENCE PROPOSAL AND MENTOR AGREEMENT ARE DUE FRIDAY, MAY 4! Visit TC School Counseling on Canvas to view and complete Proposal (Google Form) and forward the Mentor Agreement to your mentor. Forms can be turned in to Mrs. Hawn in the College and Career Center.

    ADMITTED TO COLLEGE! NOW WHAT? This presentation on Tuesday, April 17 at 5:30pm in the King Street Rotunda (E201) provides senior families with guidance on deciding on the best college fit, understanding financial aid, scholarships and loans, clarifying timelines and requirements as well as advice on transitioning to college and completing college successfully. In addition, families will hear about special events and traditions leading up to graduation.

    NOVA MULTIPLE MEASURES FOR PLACEMENT TEST WAIVERS Students may be able to use their GPA or SAT/ACT scores to waive the requirement to take a placement test for admission to NOVA. Eligibility for ENG 111: GPA of 3.0 OR ACT score of 18 OR SAT Reading/Writing score of 480. Eligibility for Math 154/155: GPA of 3.0 & Algebra 2 completed OR SAT Math score of 510 or ACT score of 19. Eligibility for Math 161/167: GPA of 3.0 & Pre-Calculus or higher completed OR SAT Math score of 530 or ACT score of 22. See Mr. Addison in the College and Career Center for more information.

    SCHOLARSHIPS!!

    NATIONAL COALITION OF 100 BLACK WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an African-American female with a 3.0 GPA who attends high school in Alexandria or Arlington and has been accepted to a two- or four-year college. Application is available on Naviance or from Mrs. Hawn in the College and Career Center. Deadline is April 15.

    ALEXANDRIA SPORTSMAN CLUB SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION is available at http://alexandriavasports.org/2018-college-scholarship-application-information/. The application consists of a two-page essay addressing athletics, academics and community service. The deadline is EXTENDED to April 20.

    CTE ROTARY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP The $2,500 Career and Technical Education Scholarship is awarded to an Alexandria student (US citizen, permanent resident or asylee/refugee) with demonstrated excellence in the development of trade or technical skills and who has made a commitment to pursue a CTE field in college. Copies of the application are available in the College and Career Center. Deadline is April 20.

    GLADWELL-VAUTRIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP will be awarded to two female U.S. citizens living in Alexandria who are attending college in Fall 2018. Application instructions are in Naviance. Applications must be mailed to arrive by May 11.

    SCHOLARSHIP FOR T.C. WILLIAMS SENIORS The Donald R Allen Scholarship is available to T.C. Williams HS seniors and relatives of graduates from Parker-Gray, George Washington or T.C. Williams. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and evidence of school and community involvement. Find the application at www.aosalumniassn.org or pick up a copy in the College and Career Center. Deadline is May 19.
