Liza Burrell-Aldana, Principal

Liza Burrell-Aldana was appointed principal of Mount Vernon Community in 2017, after serving as an assistant principal for three years. Burrell-Aldana brings 27 years of experience as an educator, 13 of which have been spent as a teacher and instructional leader in dual language programs.

Burrell-Aldana was born in Colombia and graduated from Universidad del Valle in Cali with a bachelor's degree in foreign languages. She later was awarded a scholarship from the School for International Training in VT in order to complete a Master of Arts in teaching and went on to pursue a master's in education leadership from George Mason University. Burrell-Aldana also holds a professional certificate in Education Policy and Program Assessment from Georgetown University and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Education Leadership and Policy Studies at VA Tech University. Ms. Burrell-Aldana is currently in the Virginia Advisory Committee for the Education of the Gifted. This committee provides guidance to the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction about the educational needs of students identified as gifted in school divisions.


Burrell-Aldana is a passionate, bilingual educator with a strong commitment to academic achievement, whole child development, teacher growth, and effective home-school communication. She believes in a collaborative vision of education and in putting students first in school decision-making.

Burrell-Aldana is a fitness enthusiast and dog lover. She enjoys working out, healthy eating, and spending time with her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Jennifer Hamilton, Assistant Principal to Specialized Instruction & EL Services

Ms. Hamilton joined the Mount Vernon administrative team in 2018 after serving ACPS students, families, and staff as an instructional specialist in the Office of English Learner Services for four years. Prior to this, she served as a National Board Certified ESOL/HILT teacher in Arlington Public Schools.  In addition to her classroom experience, Ms. Hamilton has trained teachers through the Center for Language and Education Development at Georgetown University and consulted on regional and national language proficiency assessments at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Spanish with a minor in Linguistics and an MAT-ESL from Georgetown University, an Ed.S. in Reading Education from the University of Virginia, and a post-graduate certificate in Educational Leadership from The George Washington University. Ms. Hamilton's own experiences as a Spanish learner in the U.S. and abroad have fostered her passion for dual language and bilingual education, and she is so proud to serve the Mount Vernon community as an assistant principal! When she is not at school, she enjoys cooking, practicing yoga, and spending time with her son and husband.

Laura Burkart, Assistant Principal to Grades Kindergarten, 1 and 2

Laura Burkart is a returning Assistant Principal to Mount Vernon. She is entering her 17th year in education and has extensive experience working with diverse student and family populations. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and an MAT from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She earned a master’s degree in Education Leadership from George Mason University. Mrs. Burkart is passionate about ensuring high levels of academic achievement for all of our students within our dual language program. Her focus this year will be primarily supporting students, families, and staff in kindergarten, first grade, and the City-Wide program at Mount Vernon. In her personal time, Mrs. Burkart enjoys knitting, running, and gardening. She and her family live in the Del Ray community. If you see them out and about, please stop and say hello! Mrs. Burkart is looking forward to another wonderful year serving our community.

Julanne Keil, Assistant Principal to Grades 3, 4, and 5

Julanne Keil is excited to be a part of the leadership team at Mount Vernon Community School (MVCS). This will be year 13 at MVCS and year 14 in education. She graduated with a degree in Elementary and Special Education from The University of South Dakota and has a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from George Mason University. During her time at Mt. Vernon, she has held the roles of Assistant Principal, Instructional Coordinator, and Special Education Teacher. Mrs. Keil is passionate about the progress and success of all students. She understands what it is like to be a language learner from her year of living in Berlin, Germany, and values this experience from a professional and personal perspective. She looks forward to supporting students, families, and staff in the third, fourth and fifth grades. In her free time, Mrs. Keil enjoys running, music, and spending time with family and friends.
