ACPS School Nutrition Services Supports Ramadan and Lent

Decorative Ramadan Mubarak sign with mosque motif above two meal boxes labeled 'Ramadan Kareem.' The meal boxes list contents like tuna, chickpeas, and fruit.

Alexandria City Public Schools( ACPS) School Nutrition Services (SNS) is committed to serving fresh, local and scratch-made meals that reflect the diverse needs of its students. During Ramadan, students who are fasting are provided with shelf-stable meals to take home and break their fast in the evening. This marks the second year ACPS has provided take-home meals for students. Students who are fasting may choose from three shelf-stable meal kits available for purchase during lunchtime at all schools. Each kit includes one suhoor (morning pre-fast meal) option and two iftar (sunset fast-breaking meal) options, and meets United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines for a complete, reimbursable meal with whole grains, proteins, fruits, vegetables and milk. These meals were thoughtfully developed with both nutrition and cultural sensitivity in mind, while working within the parameters of the school nutrition program.

Throughout the year, ACPS also ensures that students observing Lent have access to meatless options on Fridays, including fish, cheese pizza and other vegetarian selections. These offerings are part of the Division’s broader commitment to honoring and accommodating students of all backgrounds and traditions.
