Celebrating Success: ACPS Celebrations of Learning

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) families, staff and community members came together in support of the Celebrations of Learning event on May 19, 2026, at the Alexandria City High School (ACHS) Minnie Howard campus. The event highlighted project-based learning (PBL) experiences taking place across ACPS and provided an opportunity to see firsthand how students are engaging in meaningful, community-connected learning.

The evening began with a student panel, where learners reflected on their project experiences and shared how they developed the attributes of the ACPS Profile of a Learner: Advocate, Communicator, Collaborator, Critical Thinker, Innovator and Changemaker. Students spoke about the ways project-based learning challenges them to think deeply, solve problems, collaborate with others and connect classroom learning to authentic issues and experiences. Their stories offered a powerful reminder that learning becomes even more meaningful when students see themselves and their communities reflected in their work.

Throughout the showcase, attendees explored a wide range of projects spanning grade levels and subjects. Students presented work that connected rigorous academics with real-world applications and action, requiring research and investigation into literature, history, math, engineering and science. Students created awareness campaigns on issues such as environmental sustainability and human trafficking, while younger learners designed homes that balanced human needs with protecting animal habitats. 

Visitors also experienced projects rooted in civic engagement and community impact. During the CivicTREK Town Hall, students presented their Civic Action Project research and proposals to community leaders and stakeholders. Participants demonstrated how connecting with community partners and experts from various fields strengthened their understanding.

Together, these projects demonstrated the power of project-based learning to deepen academic understanding while helping students cultivate the knowledge, skills and mindsets needed to thrive in school, community and beyond.
