Community Engagement Events

Alexandria Public Library: Beginner and intermediate English conversation

Weekly sessions at different library locations.

Improve your English speaking skills. The Alexandria Library invites everyone interested to join a conversation group to practice English and gain confidence. No registration is needed.

Alexandria Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities

Looking for fun and engaging activities around the city? Alexandria City Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) offers a variety of programs and events for all ages, including sports, fitness classes, family-friendly festivals and much more. ALIVE! is a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency and basic needs support to children, families and individuals living in poverty and with hunger in the City of Alexandria. ALIVE! distributes bags of food to Alexandria City residents. No ID is required.

Back-to-School Night Events

Various dates and times (see below).

Families are invited to Back-to-School Night events every year to meet the teachers and staff at each school, learn about their students’ classes and engage in discussions about curriculum. Each school will communicate with their students, families and staff regarding the schedules for Back-to-School Night.

Thu., Sept. 4, 2025 - Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology; Mount Vernon Community School; and Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School.

Tue., Sept. 9, 2025 ( Grades K-4) - Sept.10, 2025 (Grades  5-8) - Patrick Henry K-8 School split grades. 

Wed., Sept. 10, 2025: Alexandria City High School - King Street Campus and ACHS Satellite. 

Thu., Sept. 11, 2025: Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Campus (including Early Childhood Programs), and ACHS Chance for Change.

Thu., Sept. 18, 2025: Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School, Francis C. Hammond Middle School and George Washington Middle School.

Recovery Month Day Event (Kickoff)

Thu., Sept. 4, 2025 - 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. 

Del Pepper Community Resource Center (4850 Mark Center Dr.) 

Kick off Recovery Month with a day of healing and connection. Enjoy creative art projects, yoga, mindful movement and more – all designed to nurture the body, mind and spirit. Come recharge, connect with peers and celebrate the many pathways to recovery. 

Third Annual Black Family Reunion
Sat., Sept. 6, 2025 - 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library (717 Queen St.) 

Celebrate Alexandria’s African American heritage with free food, music, dancing and activities for all ages, including oral history recording stations. Bring family photos or documents to be digitized and included in the library’s archives. 

ALX Jazz Fest Pop Up Market at Southern Towers 

Sun., Sept. 7, 2025 - noon- 2 p.m. 

Southern Towers (5067 Seminary Rd.)

A pop-up concert is coming to neighborhoods across the city, bringing music and art directly into the community. This free event features interactive art activations, live jazz performances and spoken word artists honoring America’s original art form.

Cultural Observance Days

On weekdays, cultural observance days are regular school days. However, these days should not hold assessments, sporting events and other school sponsored special activities. Any missed assignments due to student absences on these days can be made up without penalty.

The regularly scheduled School Board meetings will take place.

School Board meetings are held in person in the School Board meeting room at 1340 Braddock Place, unless otherwise noted. Members of the public may attend in person or via Zoom. Please visit the School Board webpage for any updates to the meeting schedule.
