George Washington Middle School Students Shine with Spark of Inspiration Award

A vibrant painting split in two: left, people sit on red flowers under a blue sky with clouds; right, a butterfly flutters near yellow flowers against a pink backdrop.

The inspirational artwork of two George Washington Middle School (GWMS) students have been selected for a Spark of Inspiration Award for the #CreateConnectCare creative expression and storytelling campaign for youth mental health and well-being.

Summer Hersey's creative work, “A Butterfly's Journey” captured the heart of the mission and her work will play a significant role in fostering open conversations about youth mental health shared GWMS Art Teacher, Janice Rollins. She further said that Caroline Underwood's “Happy Place” resonated deeply for its creativity and compassion. To honor the exceptional contribution of Hersey and Underwood, each will receive a cash award of $100.

The global initiative and challenge, #CreateConnectCare, created by and for youth, encourages young people (ages 11–18) to share their experiences, reduce stigma and explore mental health through art, video, music, writing and movement.
