School Board Policy Revisions

At the Alexandria City School Board meeting on Feb. 19, 2026, the School Board amended five policies, and the superintendent amended one regulation. The following is a summary of the key changes, details are available on BoardDocs.

CA – Superintendent Duties  

  • Requested review.
  • Relocated the Superintendent’s Major Duties from CBA (Qualifications and Duties for the Superintendent) to CA (Superintendent Duties).
  • Reorganized the content under the eight standards in Virginia Department of Education’s  (VDOE) Guide for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Superintendents. 
  • Added additional content from the standards to close gaps in alignment.
  • Updated to reflect the 2023 revisions to Va. Code § 22.1-279.8 by HB 1704/SB 821 and Va. Code § 22.1-79.3 by HB 1630/SB 1479.

CBA - Qualifications and Duties for the Superintendent

  • Request review.
  • Relocated Major Duties to CA (Superintendent Duties).
  • Added a School Board belief statement.
  • Expanded qualifications to better reflect Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) desired qualifications.

EBAB - Possible Exposure to Viral Infections (also GBEE)

  • Five-year review.
  • Standard changes.
  • Minor wording changes to improve clarity.

EBBB - Personnel Training Viral Infections (also GBED)

  • Five-year review.
  • No changes.

JHCD - Administering Medicines to Students

JHCD-R - Regulations for the Administration of Medications to Students

  • Code Change.
  • Policy updated to reflect revisions Va. Code §§ 8.01-225, 22.1-274.2, 22.1-274.6 and 54.1-3408 by HB2104 (student self-carry of seizure medications).
  • Regulation updated to establish a method to implement the policy change.

ACPS has over 400 policies and regulations which are systematically revised prior to being presented to the School Board for information. The revision process includes alignment with the associated Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) model policy, alignment with the Code of Virginia, an equity review, a legal review, revisions by a team of staff members, a Senior Leadership Team review, and a School Board Policy Committee review. Public input on proposed revisions is taken at School Board Policy Committee meetings and regular School Board meetings.
