Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels

Dr.Kay-Wyatt speaking to new teachers.

The heartwork at Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) takes year-round dedication. Here are some “Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels,” as Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt takes us from the summer months into the start of a new school year.

Students at summer school.

July 2025 - Students participated in numerous learning programs throughout the summer. These programs included a variety of camps, language academies, extended school year special education instruction, as well as curriculum for Young Scholars students and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning for grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

July 21, 2025 - New Principal Jerylen Daniels and staff welcomed Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School students and longtime staff, such as custodian Miss Pat, back to school on July 21, with support from School Board member Dr. Donna Kenley and Chief of Staff Dr. Grace Taylor.

July 2025 – Leadership Academy: Two great days of Leadership Academy sessions for ACPS school-based and central office-based senior and support staff provided opportunities to create, connect and elevate so that together, we can continue to nurture, educate and inspire all ACPS students in the new school year.

ACHS Summer Graduates

July 31, 2025 - Alexandria City High School Summer Graduation: The culminating moment for every aspiring Titan…graduation! This July, we gathered together to celebrate the summer graduation of 48 students earning their high school diplomas and four having earned their general equivalency diploma (GED).

August 2025 - ACPS held a New Licensed Staff Orientation to help onboard and welcome its newest teachers and student instructional support staff.

August 2025 - ACPS Backpack Drive: Thanks to the generous donations from community partners and the dedicated work of dozens of volunteers and staff, the 2025 ACPS Backpack Drive, organized and facilitated by the Department of School & Community Relation’s Office of Community Partnerships and Engagement, was a huge success. Over 3,500 backpacks were collected and filled with school supplies, including notes handwritten by staff welcoming students in all grade levels. It was a huge heartwork undertaking and the outcome was outstanding. We thank all those who made it possible for ACPS students to have what they need to be prepared to learn in the new school year.

August 2025 - Monumental Sports Back-to-School Tip-Off: As the first day for most schools quickly approached, ACPS students had the unique opportunity to participate in a Monumental Sports Back-to-School Tip-Off hosted by the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Washington Wizards and its team mascot. What a fun way to kick off a new school year.

August 2025 - Welcoming back our bus drivers bright and early was a tangible representation of how we are all one team on one journey to enable our students to succeed, starting with safe and secure transportation to and from school every day.
