Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels

Visiting Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and events across the school division, Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt enjoyed her time spent with students, staff and members of the community. Those moments are captured in “Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels”:

The original remember the titans football team.

Sept. 19, 2025: ACPS celebrated the 25th anniversary of “Remember the Titans,” the inspirational film that tells the story of the legendary 1971 T.C. Williams Titans championship. The Titans football team, under the guidance of its first African American Head Coach Herman Boone, led its white and black players to victory, demonstrating how the team members' show of unity and resilience made a significant historical and impactful difference in how the politics of segregation were viewed after that.

Oct. 8, 2025: The superintendent had the pleasure of reading to students at William Ramsay Elementary School and said she was honored to share stories that celebrate culture, history and community.

Oct. 8, 2025: Dr. Kay-Wyatt met with future Titans and enjoyed the first TitansRising visit of the 2025-26 school year at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School.

Oct. 15, 2025: More than 90 families joined the superintendent for an in-person and virtual Community Budget Forum at the Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Campus. This gathering is yet another way in which ACPS strives to cultivate trust through clear communication and community engagement in keeping with our 2030 Strategic Plan.

Financial Services department leaders shared a presentation focusing on our budget theme of Nurture, Educate, Inspire—the three “buckets” that represent how we invest in our students. As every voice matters, this community conversation will help shape the budget and advocate for needed resources for our students and staff.

Oct. 22, 2025: Dr. Kay-Wyatt was at Mount Vernon Community School (MVCS) for the unveiling of a banner that officially designates the school as a Project ADAM heart safe school. Dr. John R. Phillips, pediatric cardiologist from the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and the medical director of the Virginia Affiliate to Project ADAM, presented MVCS with a banner to commemorate this milestone. MVCS is one of the first schools in Northern Virginia to receive this recognition.
