Snapshots from the Superintendent's School Travels

A group of diverse people stands on wooden steps in front of a large open book backdrop with "Once upon a Time" and a castle illustration. They appear cheerful and professional.

Visiting Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and events across the school division, Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt enjoys her time spent with students, staff and members of the community. Those moments are captured in “Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels”:

March 4, 2026: The superintendent visited Patrick Henry K-8 School (Patrick Henry) to see its Breakfast in the Classroom program in action. Dr. Kay-Wyatt was joined by Alexandria City Mayor Alyia Gaskins, Patrick Henry Principal Kenard Robinson, Third Grade Teacher Wesley Brooks-Jones, ACPS School Nutrition Services Director Dr. Eric Coleman, Executive Chef Jason Tepper, ACPS leadership staff and a group of dignitaries that included ACPS School Board members. Patrick Henry’s innovative breakfast program helps ensure students start their day nourished, focused and ready to learn. Mayor Gaskins read a proclamation recognizing National School Breakfast Week, March 2-6, 2026, thanking ACPS school nutrition staff and leadership as she highlighted Alexandria’s commitment to student health and academic success. It was a great way to celebrate the most important meal of the day…breakfast!

March 4, 2026: During the superintendent’s visit to George Mason Elementary School, she had the pleasure of taking part in their Read Across America events with engaged students and  teachers Holly West, Jordan Moynihan and Brittany Odonnell.

March 4, 2026: During Dr. Kay-Wyatt’s TitansRising visit to Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School, Teacher Louisa Tio and her students filled the superintendent in on the heart work they do.

March 18, 2026: We welcomed Leadership Greater Washington for an Education Day site visit at Mount Vernon Community School and the ACHS Minnie Howard Campus. Thank you to Mount Vernon Community School Principal Hamilton and ACHS Acting Executive Principal Harrell for hosting and showcasing the impactful work happening across ACPS!

March 19, 2026: The Fifth Annual Essential Workers Recognition celebration was held at Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School in collaboration with George Mason Elementary School, currently housed at the neighboring 1703 N. Beauregard swing space. It was another successful year celebrating the essential workers our school community relies on and very much appreciates. Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and Alexandria City leaders, Alexandria City School Board members and Parent-Teacher Association Council (PTAC) leadership were among those who came together with ACPS staff and students to thank essential workers for their many contributions that keep our schools running safely each day.
