Visiting Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and events across the school division, Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt and the leadership team enjoyed time spent with students, staff and members of the community. Those moments are captured in “Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels”:

April 29, 2026: Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow Day – Dr. Kay-Wyatt joined students who aspire to be teachers at the event which culminated with a formal commitment to the students’ future careers with Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). As part of the “ACPS Educator Pathway,” students signed on to a contingent teaching offer with the school division, upon the completion of their education degrees.

May 2026: PTA Reflections Art Contest – Chief Financial Officer Dominic Turner served as the superintendent’s designee at the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Reflections Art Contest event that celebrated the artwork of ACPS student winners. This event is sponsored annually by the PTA and supported by school staff.

May 13, 2026: Alexandria City High School (ACHS) Classroom Visit: The superintendent had a great visit interacting with students at ACHS and hearing about what they are learning as Standards of Learning (SOL) testing continued across the school division.

May 15, 2026: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Sweet Senior Send Off – Executive Director of Instructional Support Carmen Sanders attended this event that celebrated the 47 AVID senior students who, collectively, have earned over $6.1 million dollars in scholarships to date. Sanders was joined by Chief of Staff Dr. Grace Taylor as the event showcased this success story for the 13th graduating AVID cohort.

May 19, 2026: Celebrations of Learning – The superintendent joined Chief Academic Officer Dr. Pierrette Finney, along with other central office and school-based administrators at the event held at ACHS’ Minnie Howard campus. The evening highlighted project-based learning (PBL) experiences across the school division and provided an opportunity to see firsthand how students are engaging in meaningful, community-connected learning.

May 20, 2026: Governor’s Health Sciences Academy (GHSA) Year-End Event – Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Workforce Development Director Arnaz Dotivala attended the GHSA Year-End Ceremony on behalf of the superintendent. At the event, 51 students were celebrated as they graduated from GHSA’s five pathway programs that focus on emergency medical services (EMS), sports medicine, medical lab services, nursing and surgical sciences. This program continues to support students as they move forward to work in high demand, high wage positions in the medical field where there is a significant need.
