The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announced its 2025-26 Virginia Principals of Distinction, the first-year completion of a recognition and professional development program. Alexandria City Public Schools’ (ACPS) Heidi Haggerty Wagner, the principal of the Early Childhood Center, is among the inaugural class to be recognized by VDOE as one of the Commonwealth's highly accomplished principals.

"Ms. Wagner exemplifies the very best of educational leadership. Her recognition as a VDOE Principal of Distinction reflects her unwavering commitment to early childhood education and her ability to cultivate a nurturing, inclusive and high-performing learning environment. Through intentional instructional leadership, meaningful family engagement and a deep understanding of young learners' developmental needs, she has created a school community where every child is known, supported and positioned for success. " said ACPS Chief Academic Officer Dr. Pierrette Finney.

“This year’s Principals of Distinction are delivering on what high expectations and excellence looks like for every student," noted Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway. “Through this program, and through their commitment to continuous improvement to meet the needs outlined in Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework, these individuals are leading the way to provide high quality education and supports for every student.”

This program is in partnership with the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals and the Virginia Board of Education.
