ACPS Announces Michael A. Diggins as Executive Director of Student Services

Michael A. Diggins has been appointed executive director of student services for Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), and will assume the position on April 10, 2023. In this role, Diggins will oversee the Office of Student Services by providing a high level of supervision and evaluation, accountability and support to assigned staff charged with running the day-to-day operations in the department.

"Mr. Diggins brings a level of commitment to ACPS that is unmatched. The existing relationships that he has intentionally built with students and families over the last 28 years, coupled with his unique skills and deep knowledge, will allow him to bring innovation to this position,” Chief of Student Services and Equity Dr. Marcia E. Jackson said. “We look forward to having him join our Student Services and Equity team to partner with school staff to impact our students in even more positive ways."

Diggins first joined ACPS in 1995 and, most recently, has served as the lead administrator for operations and student support at Alexandria City High School-King Street Campus. Diggins strives to empower students and ensure they have multiple pathways to a high school diploma, college and careers. He has guided staff in eliminating achievement gaps among underserved students while focusing on social, emotional and academic learning (SEAL) to support student needs.

During his tenure in ACPS, Diggins has also served as dean of students at the middle and high school levels, as well as having been an associate principal. He initially joined the division as a high school technology teacher and later served as a marketing and crisis resource teacher.

Diggins has a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Education from Virginia Tech and a Master of Education in Education Leadership from George Mason University. He earned a graduate certificate in Integrating Standards of Learning in Curriculum at Virginia Tech. In addition, he has an Integration of Technology in schools certificate from George Mason University. He also holds a Virginia post-graduate license in education administration post-grad K-12.
