ACPS Names George Mason Elementary School’s Nathan Hershberger as the 2022-23 ACPS Teacher of the Year

The 2022-23 Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Teacher of the Year is Nathan Hershberger. He currently teaches fifth grade math, science and social studies at George Mason Elementary School, where he previously served as a third grade teacher. Hershberger first joined ACPS as a third grade teacher at William Ramsay Elementary School after moving to Alexandria in 2014.

“Mr. Hershberger works exceedingly well with his team members. Whether teaching all subjects or serving on a departmentalized team, Mr. Hersberger ensures that his students excel!”  George Mason Elementary School Principal Dr. Seazante`Oliver said.

Hershberger sees his classroom as a workshop of thinkers, learners, scientists, artists, mathematicians and historians. He was selected for his work in creating authentic activities to inspire both students and colleagues. Hershberger leads his students in developing their science vocabulary, engaging in science experiments and collecting data to test their hypotheses, as well as participating in project-based learning opportunities. Working tirelessly to ensure the academic, social and emotional needs of every student, he creates a challenging and enriching environment in the context of a nurturing, loving classroom.

Hershberger is also a member of the Science Task Force, a group of teachers who help in making science curriculum decisions. Hershberger earned a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Pittsburgh.
