ACPS School Boundary Redistricting Update

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is launching the community engagement phase of the school boundary redistricting process. This important initiative is designed to ensure that future school boundaries reflect the needs of our growing community, equitably distribute students across schools and support efficient resource allocation. As part of this process, the Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) will convene this month to begin its work in collaboration with the ACPS Redistricting Steering Committee. In addition, the guiding principles for the redistricting process, which have recently been finalized and are available to view on the ACPS School Boundary Redistricting webpage, will be used in the development of the boundary proposals that will be shared with the community.

The process follows the following timeline:

• Preparation (October–November 2024), which included developing student forecasts for future planning and identifying enrollment patterns and challenges.
• Initiation (November 2024–January 2025), which includes conducting a “Data 101” session and finalizing guiding principles and reviewing and assessing current boundaries.
• Boundary Development (February–April 2025), which will include developing and refining boundary options and scenarios and gathering community feedback through engagement sessions.
• Finalization (April–June 2025), which will focus on finalizing boundary maps and publishing reports. The School Board will vote on the final plan in June 2025.

At the Jan. 15, 2025, meeting, the Redistricting Steering Committee provided an overview of the process, a data update from MGT, the vendor with which ACPS is working with for the redistricting process, an update on the RAC, the process timeline and upcoming community meetings.
