ACPS to Partner with AIR on School Site Visits Focused on Social and Emotional Learning
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is partnering with the American Institutes for Research (AIR), an independent research organization, to conduct a study on the district’s programs and practices that support social and emotional learning (SEL). In April, AIR researchers will talk with students, teachers, school personnel and school leaders and observe classrooms during visits at six schools that represent the diversity of the ACPS community: Alexandria City High School, Francis C. Hammond Middle School, Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 School, Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology, Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School and James K. Polk Elementary School.
Specifically, AIR will examine how our division supports healthy relationships within the schools through the SEL programs and practices in place. The study is aimed at helping ACPS refine and improve the implementation of SEL programs so that students’ social and emotional needs are met. AIR is working in collaboration with a group of adults in schools across the division, students, family liaisons and city partners to ensure that diverse voices are included in the study.
SEL is the process of learning to recognize emotions in oneself and others, managing emotions and making responsible decisions. SEL practices promote supportive relationships between adults and students which can have a positive impact on teaching and learning.
Staff and families from these six schools will receive more detailed information. Study findings and recommendations will be shared in the fall of 2024.
