City Invites Community Feedback for Upcoming Safe Routes to School Walk Audits

City Invites Community Feedback for Upcoming Safe Routes to School Walk Audits

The City of Alexandria is requesting community feedback on walking and biking conditions around five schools as part of its Safe Routes to School Program to make it safer and easier for children to walk and bike to school. The five Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) locations are:

  • Alexandria City High School-King Street Campus.
  • Alexandria City High School-Minnie Howard Campus.
  • Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School.
  • Francis C. Hammond Middle School.
  • George Washington Middle School.

Families, students, school staff and administrators, as well as people who live or work near each school, are encouraged to share their comments. Complete the online feedback form by April 2, 2023. The form is available in English, Spanish, Amharic and Arabic.

These walk audits, in addition to community input, will result in recommendations for safety improvements around these five schools. This project is the second phase in the City’s Safe Routes to School walk audit efforts. The first phase of walk audits was completed in 2017 for 13 ACPS elementary and K-8 schools. The city is actively implementing recommendations from these walk audits, and more than half of the approximately 250 recommendations have either been completed or are currently in progress.
